Why are my photos blurry when I zoom in?
Wide shots come out sharp. Zoom in and the same hands produce a smeared photo. Nothing changed about you. Something changed about the maths.
Zoom magnifies your shake too
Your hands always tremble slightly. At a wide angle that tremble moves the image by a tiny amount, too small to see. Zoom in and the lens magnifies everything in the frame — including the movement caused by your hands.
Double the zoom and you double the blur from the same tremble. That is the whole mechanism.
The rule that fixes it
The classic guideline: your shutter speed should be at least 1 divided by the focal length.
- At 24mm (wide) → 1/24s or faster
- At 50mm (normal) → 1/50s or faster
- At 200mm (long) → 1/200s or faster
So when you zoom, you need a faster shutter. If the camera is in automatic and the room is dim, it will happily hand you 1/15s at full zoom — and that is your smear.
Blur from shake looks like the whole picture smeared in one direction. Blur from missed focus looks like one part soft and another part sharp. Tell them apart before you try to fix them.
What to do about it
- Raise the shutter speed. Switch to S mode and set it above the 1/focal-length line. The camera compensates with aperture and ISO.
- Let ISO climb. A slightly grainy sharp photo beats a clean blurred one. Noise can be reduced later; motion blur cannot.
- Brace. Elbows against your ribs, back against a wall, phone against a railing. Free, and worth more than a stop.
- Do not pinch-zoom past the real lens. Beyond the optical range you are cropping, which magnifies shake and throws away pixels at the same time.
Stabilisation helps, but not with everything
Optical and electronic stabilisation cancel small movements and buy you a few stops. They cannot help when the subject is moving — a running child at 1/30s is blurred no matter how still you are. For that you need the shutter, not the stabiliser.
